Career Paths

The ports industry offers an interesting and challenging environment to work in, with a variety of jobs based not only on land but also on the water.

Ports and harbours employ a range of specialist people to ensure that they are operated efficiently.  Jobs can be manual, administrative, technical or managerial; working in various locations within the port environment.

Many UK ports are currently expanding, creating career opportunities for those wishing to work within the industry or for those already working within it. Until recently there have not been many qualifications available to support career development, or entry into the industry. We are currently developing a framework for the Foundation Degree that will cover four career pathways; namely Harbour Masters, Marine Pilots, Vessel Traffic Services and Port Management. We are also developing an Apprenticeship in Port Operations.

Information on career development routes and qualifications that are currently available can be found on the Port Skills and Safety website.
