The National Launch of the Safer Ports Initiative 2 was covered in the July 2006 issue of The Pilot magazine.  The UKMPA - the UK Maritime Pilots' Association - is closely involved with the development of maritime standards and qualifications.

The second phase of the Safer Ports Initiative – SPI2 – was launched, nationally, on 10 May 2006.  SPI2 was launched by the Minister for Transport who was supported by the Chairman of the HSE, Chief Executive of the MCA, senior health and safety officer of the TUC as well as senior industry representatives.  The Transport Minister said:

"The integrated approach to health, safety and skills for everyone involved in port operations will, I am sure, result in the continuing reduction in accidents in our ports…The Safer Ports Initiative will help the Ports Industry go from strength to strength; becoming more efficient, more profitable and safer and better places to work.”
