The Safer Ports Initiative (SPI) was originally launched in September 2002. Challenging accident reduction targets were set for the ports industry, which were significantly higher than those set by Government for industry as a whole.
By the end of 2004, the targets set had been achieved and exceeded:

The ports industry remains committed to the drive for continuous improvement - illustrated by the launch of SPI 2 on 10 May 2006.
The launch speakers reflect the underlying partnership, working within the industry, they are: the Minister of State for Transport, the Chairman of the Health and Safety Commission, the Chief Executive of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the Group Chief Executive of ABP Holdings plc and the Senior Policy Officer in the Organisation and Services Department at the Trades Union Congress.
